Why Blame John Essay Example For Students
Why Blame John Essay Charlotte Perkins Gilmans short story The Yellow Wallpaper has been historically viewed as either a work of supernatural horror or as a feminist treatise regarding the role of women in society. A close analysis of Gilmans use of symbols reveals The Yellow Wallpaper as her response to the misogynist view of hysteria from ancient times through the nineteenth century. In The Yellow Wallpaper Gilman questions the validity of Hippocratess theory of the wandering uterus and Weir Mitchells rest cure. As she wrote in her essay Why I Wrote the Yellow Wallpaper?, the story was not intended to drive people crazy, but to save people from being driven crazyâ⬠¦ (107). By her own account, Gilmans purpose in writing The Yellow Wallpaper was to educate and inform the public of the misinterpretation of hysterical symptoms. As James Palis writes in The Hippocratic Concept of Hysteria: A Translation of the Original Texts: Etymologically, the term usteria (hysteria) derives from ustera (hystera), the Greek word for uterus, which means an inferior position. Thus, usteria denotes suffering of the uterus, the most inferior organ in the female (226). The fact that the literal translation of hystera is inferior position reinforces the fact that from ancient times women were viewed as physically inferior to men. Since the one major physical difference between women and men is the presence of the uterus, psychological problems that were considered to be strictly female were attributed to some malfunction of the uterus. Hippocrates first proposed in his work The Art of Healingthat hysteria was caused by a wandering uterus (Hothersall 16). He believed that the uterus could dislodge itself in the body and wander around the female body attaching itself to other organs. Hippocrates explained that the various symptoms of hysteria, such as nervousness, depression, and hysterical fits, were caused by the uteruss interactions with the other organs in the body. In his text On the Nature of Women he explains the cause and treatment of a hysterical fit: If the uterus comes towards the liver, the female suddenly becomes speechless, and clenches her teeth, and her color comes backâ⬠¦In such situations, push beneath the liver with the hand and tighten a bandage beneath the hypochondria, and by opening the mouth administer a most fragrant wine, and anoint the nostrils and apply malodorous fumigations. And fragrant fumigations below the uterus. (Palis 227)Not only was the uterus capable of wandering around the body, it was believed that the womb was attracted and repelled by certain odors. Gilman seems to address the ridiculousness of such logic when she refers to the inconsistencies in the design of the wallpaper in The Yellow Wallpaper. The narrator complains, On a pattern like this, by daylight, there is a lack of sequence, a defiance of law, that is a constant irritant to a normal mind (263). This same complaint could be used against the popular view of hysteria. The theory that the womans uterus dislodged itself in the body and wandered around aimlessly violates natural law. In this respect, the ancient view of hysteria is similar to the wallpaper design since they both defy physical laws and cause pain to a logical mind. Textual evidence also suggests that Gilman uses the movement behind the wallpaper to represent the supposed movement of the uterus within the hysterics body. The narrator complains in her journal, I can see a strange, provoking, formless sort of figure, that seems to skulk about behind that silly and conspicuous front design (260). The silly and conspicuous front design not only refers to the wallpaper, but to the outer appearance of the nineteenth-century woman. She presented herself to society as demure, nave, and nurturing while her true character skulked behind her facade. Since any deviation from the norm of female behavior was anciently attributed to the uterus, the strange, provoking, formless sort of figure represents the womb. The narrator further describes the movement behind the wallpaper: And it is like a woman stooping down and creeping about behind that pattern (262). Just as the womb creeps within the hysterics body, the woman creeps behind the pattern of the wallpaper. The act of the woman stooping down also suggests a regression to childhood, which is also a regression to the womb. In this respect, the stooping woman wandering behind the wallpaper symbolizes the wandering uterus in the body. Another aspect of the ancient view of hysteria that Gilman confronts with her use of symbols in The Yellow Wallpaper is the way in which the medical profession prevented the uterus from wandering about the body. As Cheryl Meyer writes in The Wandering Uterus: Politics and the Reproductive Rights of Women: No one knew for certain how to prevent the hysterical fit from happening, but one cure was to anchor the uterus. This could easily be accomplished through either impregnating the woman or keeping the uterus moist through intercourse so it would not seek out the moisture of other organs. (1)Gilman employs symbols of prison and entrapment to represent the process of anchoring the uterus. Gilmans symbols represent the literal anchor of inequality that suppresses women within a misogynist society. The narrators bedroom is the most obvious symbol of womans entrapment in a misogynist society. She describes the history of the room in her journal: It was a nursery first and then a playroom and gymnasium, I should judge for the windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls (257). The description of the barred windows and the rings on the walls reveals the prison-like environment of the nursery. The emphasis on the functionality as a nursery first and then a playroom and gymnasium suggests that the room transforms to suit all terms of imprisonment. The narrators inability to escape the entrapment of societys view of women is reinforced in her husbands refusal to remove the wallpaper. He said that after the wall-paper was changed it would be the heavy bedstead, and then the barred windows, and then that gate at the head of the stairs, and so on (258). Given that one of the interpretations of the wallpaper is that it represents the Greek view of hysteria, the removal of this wallpaper represents the removal of the medical bias against women. Yet the husband views the removal of the symbolic wallpaper as inconsequential, since he believes that once he removes it he will be asked to remove the heavy bedstead, barred windows, and the gate at the head of the stairs. John represents the male viewpoint that once certain rights and liberties are afforded to women, women will demand to be equal with men. .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 , .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 .postImageUrl , .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 , .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4:hover , .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4:visited , .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4:active { border:0!important; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4:active , .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4 .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua237534d515b46b280fc7fbf336e1ba4:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Fall Of Communism In Russia EssayGilman attributed the lack of respect for women as one of the factors contributing to their depression. In her essay The Nervous Breakdown of Women she stresses the importance of economic equality between the sexes:Even if we should remove every legal and political discrimination against women; even if we should accept their true dignity and power as a sex; so long as their universal business is private housework they remain, industrially, at the level of private domestic hand labor, and economically a nonproductive, dependent class;emdash;servants of the other sex. (71)Gilman addresses the problems of the newly industrialized economy. It is her view that this shift in the power of economics from the wife and husband team to just the husband makes the abandoned wives the dependent classemdash;servants of the other sex. Gilman also addresses the belief that women are physically weaker than men in The Nervous Breakdown of Women:â⬠¦the faults and virtues, charms and failings, strength and weakness of women are being continually discussed, and one of the favorites of the disputants is the last named subject;emdash;womans physical weakness. By those who deprecate the change in the position of women, their unquestioned endurance, which has enabled them work their lives long at the ceaseless cares and labors of housework, with the cares and labors of maternity as well, is held to belong only to those special tasks; and the nervous breakdown, which is more conspicuous when the sufferer is in business, is assumed to be a consequence of that business. (67-68)She challenges the notion that though women are physically str ong enough to carry the burden of childbirth, yet they are viewed as incapable of the strength of character necessary to work outside of the home. In this passage Gilman is challenging the prominent Dr. Weir Mitchells belief that hysteria, the nervous breakdown of women, was caused when women attempted to do the work of men. According to Dr. Mitchell, the nervous breakdown occurred when women were unable to handle their own physical limitations. Dr. Mitchell developed a rest cure which he believed cured hysterical women. Mitchells rest cure was based on the premise that women were physically inferior to men. He believed that hysteria was caused by a womans inferior constitution. His rest cure consisted of ceasing all of the womans mental and physical labors. Mitchell believed that women should not seek higher forms of education because their bodies couldnt handle the stress. He explains his reasoning in his essay Wear and Tear:It were better not to educate girls at all between the ages of fourteen and eighteen, unless it can be done with careful reference to their bodily health. To-day, the American woman, is to speak plainly, too often physically unfit for her duties as a woman, and is perhaps of all civilized females the least qualified to undertake those weightier tasks which tax so heavily the nervous system of man. (110)Mitchells belief as a top nerve specialist that women are risking their bodily health by taxing their weak brains emphasizes the misinformation regarding the medical model of hysteria that was prevalent in the nineteenth century. Gilman had first-hand knowledge of the aftereffects of the rest cure. Mitchell treated her for a severe depression that followed the birth of her daughter, Katherine, during her first marriage to Charles Stetson. She notes how her experiences with Mitchell served as the inspiration behind the writing of The Yellow Wallpaper in her essay Why I Wrote the Yellow Wallpaper?:For many years, I suffered from a severe and continuous nervous breakdown tending to melancholiaemdash;and beyond. During the third year of this trouble I went, in devout faith and some faint stir of hope, to a noted specialist in nervous diseases, the best known in the country. This wise man put me to bed and applied the rest cure, to which a still good physique responded so promptly that he concluded there was nothing much the matter with me, and sent me home with solemn advice to live a domestic a life as far as possible, to have but two hours intellectual life a day, and never to touch pen, brush or pencil again a s long as I lived. I went home and obeyed those directions for some three months, and came so near the border line of utter mental ruin that I could see over. (106)Gilmans personal experiences with Dr. Mitchell revealed the fallacies in his belief that overtaxing a weak brain caused hysteria. Gilmans own experiences revealed the true cause of her melancholia: refraining from her innate desire to write. She concluded after her abstinence of writing that work is joy and growth and service, without which one is a pauper and a parasiteâ⬠¦(106). Gilman concluded that the denial of intellectual activity led to the disintegration of self-worth. Gilman directly implicates Dr. Mitchell as a member of the medical community with erroneous beliefs regarding female hysteria in The Yellow Wallpaper. The narrator complains of her husbands threat of treatment in her journal: John says if I dont pick up faster he shall send me to Weir Mitchell in the fall. But I dont want to got there at all. I had a friend who was in his hands once, and she says he is just like John and my brother, only more so! (260). This negative comparison between John and Dr. Mitchell alerts the reader that the suppression that the narrator is exposed to at the hands of her husband parallels the oppression of Gilman by Dr. Mitchell. References to Dr. Mitchells rest cure are also found within the text of The Yellow Wallpaper. Mitchell defines his rest cure in his essay Fat and Blood: â⬠¦the rest I like for my patients is not at all their notion of rest. To lie abed half the day, and sew a little and read a little, and be interesting as invalids and excite sympathy is all very well, but when they are bidden to stay in bed a month, and neither to read, write, nor sewâ⬠¦then repose becomes for some women a rather bitter medicine. (105-106)This patronizing view of treating women as school children who faked illness to stay home from school and then had to stay in bed all day is echoed in The Yellow Wallpaper in the way in which John, as the narrators husband and practicing physician, treats his wife. The narrator describes the rest cure as prescribed by her husband: â⬠¦I am absolutely forbidden to work until I am well again (255). The emphasis on work as the potential cause of hysteria mirrors Mitchells b elief that the American woman was physically unfit for her duties in Wear and Tear. Although the narrator questions the validity of the rest cure she submits to the treatment. Her reasoning is If a physician of high standing, and ones own husband, assures everyone that there is really nothing the matter with one but a temporary nervous depressionemdash;a slight hysterical tendencyemdash;what is one to do? (255). This statement most likely has autobiographical relevance. Gilman explains through the voice of her character the reasons behind her submission to Dr. Mitchells treatment. .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 , .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 .postImageUrl , .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 , .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494:hover , .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494:visited , .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494:active { border:0!important; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494:active , .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494 .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u02adcaa837d590db4b18b572d32c7494:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Illegalization Of Abortion EssayMitchells belief that the cause of hysteria is the taxation of weak minds is echoed in Johns warning to his wife. She recalls, He says that with my imaginative power and habit of story-making, a nervous weakness like mine is sure to lead to all manner of excited fancies, and that I ought to use my will and good sense to check the tendency (258). Although from a twentieth-century point of view suppressing independent thought is ludicrous, in the nineteenth-century it was good sense. Mitchells method of rest cure treated women as children by restricting them to bed rest and forbidding them to engage in any adult activities. Johns view of his wife as a child is seen in The Yellow Wallpaper in the manner in which husband and wife interact. John and the narrator do not possess a normal adult relationship. This is apparent in the way in which John refers to his wife as little girl (262) and a blessed little goose(258). John acts more as a father figure than as a husband. In response to his wifes complaints he responds, Bless her little heart!â⬠¦She shall be as sick as she pleases! insinuating that his wife is exaggerating her symptoms for comfort. He also puts her to bed like a child. His wife recalls, And dear John gathered me up in his arms, and just carried me upstairs and laid me on the bed, and sat by me and read to me till it tired my head (261). The extent to which Dr. Mitchell treated his female patients as children is apparent in his essay Fat and Blood. In regard to the rest cure he writes, Where at first the most absolute rest is desirable, I arrange to have the bowels and water passed while lying down (106). This aspect of the rest cure is also represented in The Yellow Wallpaper as the weird color and sm ell of the wallpaper that disgusts the narrator. The narrator complains, It is the strangest yellow, that wall-paper! It makes me think of all the yellow things I ever sawemdash;not beautiful ones like buttercups, but old foul, bad yellow things (265). She complains of the smell: It creeps all over the house (265). In this respect, the wallpaper symbolizes the diaper that the patient must wear. Both the wallpaper and the diaper represent the indignity of the patients treatment as infants. The fate of the female protagonist in The Yellow Wallpaper is Gilmans response to the misogynist view of hysteria from ancient times through the nineteenth century. The only option for women who are pigeonholed as mentally ill is to live up to societys expectation. Yet Gilman does not end The Yellow Wallpaper on a pessimistic note. She offers her protagonist hope in the form of the other women trapped behind the wallpaper. The narrator realizes the reason for the wallpapers ever-changing pattern:The front pattern does move-and no wonder! The woman behind shakes it! Sometimes I think there are a great many women behind, and sometimes only one, and she crawls around fast, and her crawling shakes it all over. (265)The narrator finds solace in the fact that she is not the only woman being mistreated. The narrator discovers that the only way to over come the yellow wallpaper and societys misconstrued views towards women is to unite with other oppressed women. She expresses her triumph over the wallpaper: I pulled and she shook, I shook and she pulled, and before morning we had peeled off yards of that paper (267). It is only when she unites with the other women trapped behind the wallpaper that she can start to see progress in the removal of the wallpaper. Hope for the role of women in society is also displayed through Gilmans use of imagery at the ending. The narrator questions her husbands response to her success over the wallpaper: Now why should that man have fainted? But he did, and right across my path by the wall, so I had to creep over him every time! (269). This image portrays the man as physically weaker than the woman since he is unconscious on the floor. The wifes actions of creeping over him suggest physical dominance. In this image, Gilman has reversed Dr. Weir Mitchells theory that females are the weaker sex. After a careful analysis of the textual evidence in The Yellow Wallpaper it is apparent that Gilmans purpose was far greater than scribing a supernatural tale. Although some of her reading audience found the mental degeneration of the main character disturbing, her purpose was to reveal the horrific way in which members of the medical profession treated women. The true irony lies in the fact that Gilman avenged the misogynist stereotype of the nineteenth-century woman by engaging in an activity that was forbidden by Dr. Mitchell. By choosing to disregard doctors orders in order to continue her own intellectual pursuits, Gilman forged the way for other women to question the validity of the medical communitys beliefs. Apush DBQ Sample Essay Review
Apush DBQ Sample Essay ReviewHere's my Apush DBQ sample essay. I have reviewed the first two chapters and this is how I would review the rest of the book. Apush's book is an excellent resource for anyone who has written a college term paper or dissertation. I did find it difficult to read the book at times because the writing was a little challenging for me at times. The first chapter of Apush DBQ, The Ghost Writer and He Who Shapes His Words presents the main idea for the book. This is a brief description of what happens as the writer or essayist transitions from writing in real time in order to answer a question to the writer/essayist transitioning into writing in the mode of 'writing in motion.' In other words, the writer transitions into the mode of writing of ideas and thoughts instead of the person normally would when writing a college term paper or dissertation. The idea is that there is a difference between writing in 'real time' and writing in a different type of writing. As a writer, the student must learn how to move into a new mode. The transitions are discussed at length in this chapter. It was also interesting to me to read about the many writers that were turned down for jobs at various news media outlets. The reason was that the writer could not transition from 'real time' to 'writing in motion.'Chapter two, A Look at the Do's and Don'ts of Writing, contains eight do's and seven don'ts for students to consider when writing their essays. Some examples are to provide sufficient information and supporting data, supply an accurate definition of the essay topic, make your essay well formatted, keep your essay succinct, stick to your theme, avoid plagiarism, consider the genre of the essay, and proofread the essay.Chapter three, The Hiring Process for Writers, is a good read for students planning to enter into the future of their careers. The author provides the rationale behind the list of seven things not to do in the job search process. These include not creating letters of recommendation, not having an extensive Internet search history, using the Internet to create contacts, creating professional looking resumes, overusing MLA format, not mentioning creative or specialized knowledge, not paying attention to the job market for applicants with your specialty, and not stating a purpose for applying for a position that would be clearly articulated in your curriculum vitae. The author then goes into specifics of each of these seven items and some other things to consider. The last chapter, The Authors Note, is not so much a chapter as it is a synopsis of the other chapters. For example, the authors note that there are four key factors to successful essay writing: Conflict Resolution, High Intention, Application, and Relation. Also, the authors note that the field of modern English composition as a whole is experiencing a tremendous shift in its focus from 'fixed grammar' to 'disciplined word usage.' These shifting can cause problems in writing the essay. There are several suggestions for essay writing, such as the following:There are many more potential problem areas in this book. However, I think that the problems that were raised in this short chapter is enough to warrant purchasing this book. In addition, the book is a good introduction to some of the challenges that writers students will encounter. And if you are like me, you'll be motivated to put more thought into the writing of your essay's and get more familiar with the rules and traditions of essay writing. It can be quite overwhelming trying to navigate through this very dynamic and fast-moving world of writing. The final chapter, How to Write an Essay are all about writing and is also one of the best chapters in the book. You'll learn some tips for writing 'the big one,' how to find a job and a suitable company to work for, how to type an essay, writing samples for internet usage, the most important qualities that make a great essay, and how to write a new research paper.

Illistration essay
Illistration essay Illistration essay Mr. HelgesonGoldââ¬â¢n Plump 209 North Third Street Arcadia, WI 54612 Dear CEO Helgeson: I am writing you today to give you some more information about farm animals and what is happening to them, also to inform you a little bit about how much our health has been changing since factory farms like yours have changed what we are feeding these animals. And hopefully by the time you finish reading this you will choose to change your ways for the safety of our health and your animals. A few years ago in a Montana slaughter house a Black Angus cow awaiting execution went berserk, jumped a five foot fence, and escaped. She ran through the streets for hours until cops caught her with a tranquilizer gun, bringing her down. But her daring and challenging escape had caught the eye of many local hearts. The locals in the town started sending out telephones polls demanding her freedom. The slaughterhouses manager finally released the cow to a local farm to live out her life with joy and be worry free. She was also then given the name Molly (Mathew Scully). But unlike Molly, there are plenty of cows and other factory farm animals that donââ¬â¢t get a choice or are not as brave as she was. On the other hand, some cows and other farm animals just canââ¬â¢t wait to be taken to the slaughterhouse so they can finally escape the misery that these factory famers have been putting them through. Within the past fifty years factory farmers have changed the way they treat their animals. Most of them want to make money faster and be cheap about it, they are feeding animals to grow faster making most of them unable to stand up or even walk, also by changing what they are feeding these animals it is changing our diet too, making it unhealthy. There are many changing we have seen, one of them being: ââ¬Å"In the 1970s, there were thousands of slaughterhouses producing the majority of beef sold. Today, we have only 13 (Robert Kenner).â⬠With less slaughterhouses producing the meat and with more people requesting it, we have to question the quality of our food we consume and how it is affecting our health. Farmers have changed their ways over the past years to make the animals themselves so unhealthy and overweight just to get the meat produced faster. These factory farmers have been feeding their animals so they grow big fast before their bodies are able to catch up just to get food out faster. Most of these animals are not even able to get up and walk around on their feet because of this. On todayââ¬â¢s factory farms, animals are crammed by the thousands into filthy, windowless sheds and confined to wire cages, gestation crates, barren dirt lots, and other cruel confinement systems. These animals will never raise their families, root around in the soil, build nests, or do anything that is natural and important to them. Most wonââ¬â¢t even feel the sun on their backs or breathe fresh air until the day they are loaded onto trucks bound for slaughter. Cows, calves, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and other animals live in extremely stressful conditions on these farm. These conditions range from being kept in small cages or jam-packed shed or on filthy feedlots, often with so little space that they canââ¬â¢t even turn around or lie down comfortably. Also, these animals are deprived of exercise so that all their bodiesââ¬â¢ energy goes towards producing flesh, eggs, or milk for human consumption. And sadly, these factory farm animals are fed drugs to fatten them faster and keep them alive in conditions that could otherwise kill them. ââ¬Å"Many animals become crippled under their own wright and die just inches away from water and foodâ⬠(Factory Farming: Cruelty to Animals). When they have finally grown large enough, animals raised for food are crowded onto trucks and transported over many miles through all weather extremes, typically without food or water, to the slaughterhouse. Those who survive this nightmarish journey will have their throats slit, often while they are

Capital Punishment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 5
Capital Punishment - Essay Example Despite increasing crimes, I am against capital punishment primarily because it would bring our action at par with that of criminal. Den Haag asserts that capital punishments are justified because criminals deserve ââ¬Ëan eye for an eyeââ¬â¢. He asserts that they serve as effective deterrent but unfortunately his assumptions have no concrete proof to support his hypothesis. The concept of punishment has evolved as a justified step making the criminal realize his act of omission and offense that is committed and also as an attempt to give justice to the person or people against whom it has been committed. The punishments which were supposed to serve as examples for others to refrain from crimes are increasingly becoming ineffectual. It is true that the punishment of the offender must serve as deterrent for others. At the same time, life imprisonment without parole would serve the same purpose but would be more humane and give the criminal an opportunity to reform. John Stuart Mill also argues that capital punishment is the most effective penalty for people who have no regard to other peopleââ¬â¢s lives. He says that ââ¬Ëhe who violates that right in another forfeits it for himself, and that while no other crime that he can commit deprives him of his right to live, this shallââ¬â¢. But he also agrees that ââ¬Ëthat if by an error of justice an innocent person is put to death, the mistake can never be correctedââ¬â¢. Crime has been committed and therefore the criminal must be paid back in the same manner or something which is as bad as his crime. In the modern times and in the civilized society, this act of vengeance is neither considered to be morally right or just. Our actions need to be more thoughtful and effective that conform to the wider perspectives of basic human values that sees punishment as deterrent act which also helps the criminal to reform. Hugo Adam Bedau asserts that ââ¬Ëdeath penalty is uncivilized in theory and unfair

Decision making to IT related Ethical issue Essay
Decision making to IT related Ethical issue - Essay Example The latter consists of software programs, music, videos and other content that is being protected by the international law. The sites which provide easy access to it are called trackers. One of the most famous ones, namely The Pirate Bay has been closed several times, but it still operates. One would make no mistake that there are several groups of stakeholders that can be identified in this situation. First of all, there are end users who got used to being able to download any content they want for free. Secondly, there are the creators of the contents who want to earn money with the help of it. Thirdly, there is the government who is willing to gain an effective control over this segment. Finally, there are owners of the web sites that are affected by the applicable legislation. There may be several consequences of the decision. For example, if software piracy is being taken care of severely, it will be impossible to listen to the music online (Morley & Parker, 2007, p. 604). In addition to that, a lot of web site will have to erase the content that they currently have and change to comply with the law. There are several principles that should be taken into consideration. On the one hand, the government is responsible for making sure that its citizens obey the law and punish those who refuse to do so (Kehal, 2004, p. 176). In spite of the fact that the Internet is considered to be a virtual space that does not obey any particular government, those who download the content are always situated in a particular legal framework. On the other hand, there are people who argue that free sharing should become the characteristic feature of the digital age and it is ridiculous to fight it. One might identify quite a few options that there are. To begin with, it may be rather effective to block every single web site that provides those who access it with the ability to

Partnership and Limited Liability Partnership Organization Essay Example for Free
Partnership and Limited Liability Partnership Organization Essay Introduction This is a report that shows a comparison between both Partnership and Limited Liability Partnership organization and to advise Mr. Tan on the business organization that is more likely to fit his needs for setting up a new consulting business. For this particular project, our group assumed that Mr. Tan used to be an accountant working for a big accounting firm and is now looking to set up a small accounting consultancy business. 1Process Required to Setup Business Organization Below are the processes to setting up a partnership and a limited liability partnership business organization respectively: 1.1Partnership Firstly, the partners have to fill with the Registrar an application for approval and reservation of partnership name. After the application is being approved, a partnership is required to be registered online via BizFile with ACRA through a professional business registration firm if both of the partners are not local citizen. The partnership must have at least two partners for registration. Following are the information needed: 1) Proposed name of the Partnership 2) Particulars of the partners/managers (foreign passport or Singapore ID) 3) Residential address of the partners/managers 4) Consent to Act as Manager and Statement of Non Disqualification to Act as Manager 5) If partner is a company: Registration details of the company 6) Singaporean or PR must pay Medisave 7) Declaration of compliance ACRA will then send an email of notification confirming the registration. Aà business profile containing the registration details can be obtained as a softcopy via email from ACRA upon successful registration. Softcopies are usually sufficient to all purposes in Singapore. (enterAsia Information Services Pte Ltd, 2010) 1.2Limited Liability Partnership Firstly, the partners have to fill with the Registrar an application for approval and reservation of LLP name. After the application is being approved, an LLP is required to be registered online via BizFile with ACRA through a professional business registration. Following are the information needed: 1) Proposed name of the Limited Liability Partnership 2) Particulars of the LLP partners/managers (foreign passport or Singapore ID) 3) Residential address of the LLP partners/managers 4) Consent to Act as Manager and Statement of Non Disqualification to Act as Manager 5) If partner is a company: Registration details of the company 6) Declaration of compliance ACRA will then send an email of notification confirming the Singapore LLP registration. A business profile containing the registration details can be obtained as a softcopy via email from ACRA upon successful registration of the LLP. Softcopies are usually sufficient to all purposes in Singapore. (enterAsia Information Services Pte Ltd, 2010) 2Legal Characteristics of Each of the Business Organizations 2.1The Characteristics of Partnership (ASSAR, 2011) Two or more persons: Partnership involves business by a group of persons. There must be at least two persons to bring partnership into existence. Although there is no maximum number required in the Partnership Act, the Companies Act has placed a maximum limit 20 people in a business. A company must be registered if there are more than 20 people in the business. Contractual Relation: A partnership is a contractual relationship arising out of an agreement among the partners, a person does not become a partner out of his status as is the case in joint family. Persons entering in partnership must be competent to enter into a contract as it is essential, and the agreement among partners may be oral or in writing. A written agreement or deed is preferred because it helps in resolving some disputes among partners later on. Lawful Business: A partnership agreement only exists in a lawful business. Sharing of profits: An agreement among partners must include the sharing of profits and losses. A charitable trust cannot be called partnership because there is no sharing of profits. Profit sharing is only a superficial evidence of partnership but not a conclusive proof. The employees of a business may also share profits but they are not the partners. No Separate Legal Existence: A partnership firm is not a legal entity of its own. This means that the firm and the partners are one and the same. A firm is only a name to the collective name of partners and no firm can exist without partners. The rights and liabilities of the partners are the rights and liabilities of the firm. Management of the firm vests in partners who are its owners also. Unlimited Liability: Every individual partner is liable jointly and severally for the obligations of the partnership firm. Therefore, if assets of the business are not sufficient to meet the liabilities of creditors then private property of partners can be used to meet them. The creditors can claim their dues from anyone or all the partners. If these liabilities are met by one partner then he is entitled to receive rateable contributions from other partners. Restriction on Transfer of Shares: No partner can transfer his shares to an outsider without the unanimous consent of all other partners. It is based on the principle that a partner being an agent of the firm cannot delegate his authority unilaterally to outsiders. Utmost Good Faith: The very basis of partnership business is good faith and mutual trust. Each and every partner should act honestly and fairly in the conduct of business. A firm cannot be run if there is suspicion among partners. Partners must have faith in each other for running the business smoothly. 2.2The Characteristics of Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) A limited liability partnership is a business structures that operates similar to a partnership organizational structure. The difference is the limited personal liability afforded to each member of the company. Each partner is responsible for their own actions while conducting business. LLPs are tailored for professionals, such as doctors, lawyers and accountants. (Howell, 2012) Every Partner Equal: Each partner is an equal member in a LLP company. They decide together on various company issues, such as the name of the business, where it is located and how it is going to be operated. Partners also share equally in the profits and losses of the business. The number of people in LLP must not exceed 20. Limited Liability Protection: Each partner in this type of company is protected against the actions of the other partners which results in a lawsuit. For example, if one partner is subject of a malpractice claim and loses in court and have to pay damages, the other partners are not held financially responsible. However, partners in a LLP are liable for the obligations of the company such as loans used to purchase equipment and utility expenses. Pass Through Taxation of Profits: A limited liability partnership company is taxed similar to a business formed under the partnership and sole proprietorship organizational structures by a process called pass-through taxation. The company profits are not taxed at the company level but insteadà are passed through to the partners to be reported on their individual tax returns. This prevents the double taxation that occurs in corporations where profits are taxed at the company and shareholder levels. 3Advantages and Disadvantages of Partnership and LLP 3.1Partnership Advantages of Partnership 1. Capital: Due to the nature of the business, the partners would contribute their share of capital to start up the business. Hence, the more partners there are, the higher the amount they could put into the business. This would give the partners better flexibility and greater potential for growth. It also means more potential profit, which would be equally shared between the partners. 2. Flexibility: It is generally easier to form, manage and run a Partnership. There are fewer restrictions in a partnership than in companies, in terms of the laws governing the formation. As the partners have the only say in the way the business is run without the interference of shareholders, they are far more flexible in terms of management, as long as all the partners can agree. 3. Shared Responsibility: Partners would be able to share the responsibility of the running of the business. This would allow the partners to make the most of their abilities and potential. Instead of dividing the management and taking equal shares of each business tasks, they would be able to divide the work according to their skills. Thus, if one partner is good with figures, they could deal with the book keeping and accounts, while the other partners might have different niche areas and specialize in different tasks. 4. Decision Making: Partners share the decision making and can help each other out when needed. With more partners means more brainstorming could be in place and the information they came out with could be picked out forà business ideas and for the solving of problems that the business may encounter. (Adrain, 2010) Disadvantages of Partnership 1. Disagreements: One of the most common disadvantages of partnership is the possibility of disagreements between the partners. People often have mixed ideas on how the business should be run, the task arrangements and are picky about what the best interests of the business are. All these might lead to arguments which might not only endanger the business, but also the relationship of those involved. That is why it is always preferred to draft a deed of partnership during the formation period to ensure that all partners are aware of what are in place in case of disputes and prepare for the procedures if a partnership is dissolved. 2. Agreement: As the partnership is jointly run, it is crucial that all the partners agree with decisions that are being made. This means that in some situations there is less freedom with regards to the management of the business. This is especially so compared to sole traders, where the sole trader need not seek agreement from anyone but himself. 3. Liability: Ordinary Partnerships are subject to unlimited liability, which means that each of the partners shares the liability and financial risks of the business equally. This might put of the idea of partnership for some people, as they might not want to take the risk. 4. Profit sharing: As partners share the profits equally, it can lead to inconsistency where one or more partners are not contributing a fair share of effort into the running or management of the business, but still reaping equal rewards. 3.2Limited Liability Partnership Advantages of Limited Liability Partnership (Janus Corporate Solutions, 2008) 1. Separate Legal Identity: A limited liability partnership has a separate legal identity. They can own properties, at the same time they canà enter into contracts, and sue or be sued in itsââ¬â¢ own name. 2. Limited personal liability: The partners of the limited liability partnership will not be held personally liable for any business debts incurred by the limited liability partnership or the wrongful acts of their partners. A partner may, however, be held personally liable for claims from losses resulting from his own misconducts or omission. 3. Perpetual succession: Any changes in the limited liability partnership (e.g. resignation or death of its partners) do not affect its existence, rights or liabilities. 4. Ease of compliance: Compliance requirements are more complex than sole proprietorship but simpler than a private limited company. Disadvantages of Limited Liability Partnership (Janus Corporate Solutions, 2008) 1. Formation of limited liability partnership requires a minimum number of 2 partners at all times. 2. Individual partners can commit the partnership to formal business agreements without the consent of their partners. 3. Limited liability partnership lacks the ease of ownership transfer and investment that a company structure provides. 4. There are no corporate tax benefits: Tax exemptions are available to private limited companies but are not available to limited liability partnerships. A limited liability partnership is treated as tax transparent which means that limited liability partnerships are not taxed as an entity. Instead each partner is taxed on their share of the profits as per the personal income tax rates. 4Analysis on Choosing the Business Organization Since Mr. Tan is setting up a business for accountancy consulting, he shouldà opt for a Limited Liability Partnership organization instead of a Partnership. Mr. Tan is currently new to the business world, and might not have found a partner he could fully trust yet; therefore it is also to his advantage if his partner were to act wrongfully or if there is a change in partners, since in LLPs, partners are not liable for losses to outsiders arising from acts of another partner as compared to an unlimited liability if he were to go into a Partnership. In addition, the LLP is also not subject to full financial reporting and disclosure requirements, such as those on capital contributions and changes to capital (ACRA, 2005). This is an advantage to Mr. Tanââ¬â¢s business. Since the business is small, minor changes to capital will not have to be subjected to full reporting and disclosure. Furthermore, as mentioned earlier, LLPs are tailored for accountants. With that, our group is certain that Limited Liability Partnership Organization will meet the needs of Mr. Tanââ¬â¢s new consultancy business. Bibliography ACRA. (2005, May). Milton Rogovin :: essays research papers
à à à à à When I took this class I came in with no knowledge of photography. To me pictures were just a piece of film from the past. I never appreciated photography until I entered this class and viewed the pictures from the book and visited the New York Historical Society with photographs from Milton Rogovin. His exhibition truly surprised me. When I heard about this trip I thought it was going to be another museum visit. The second I entered his exhibition I see a huge wall with two people dancing the trance. That picture really started my trip positively. As I started to look around I noticed that all of his pictures were of people. Every picture had sadness to it. These photographs really touched me. They each have their own story to tell. In the beginning I was wondering why Rogovin took photographs like that but until later I realized what his point was. These people were all from lower classes. No one ever pays attention to poor people and these photographs really ma de these people feel like they were worth something. Rogovin said that these were ââ¬Å"the neglected people and places of Buffalo, NY.â⬠When I saw these pictures it seemed so real and natural. Rogovin did not have to do much to make these photographs mean something because automatically I felt something for these people just by looking at their faces. There were pictures of mothers with children, fathers with sons, friends with friends. Rogovin loved to see people grow through his pictures. He loved the way life could change so drastically in such a little time. He had a lot of photos that consisted of more than two sets. They all started off with the people being young and ending with them grown up. It was like a story of their life in just a couple of photographs. His work is amazing and it really did bring light to these people. It was very difficult to choose one photograph since I admired all of them and they all were touching pictures. But the one that really touched m e was photo #16. à à à à à This set consisted of four photos. It was a mother with her daughter and it ranged from years 1972-2001. I first looked at this picture without reading the story or listening to the summary. I wanted to compare my view to what was actually happening.
